Under legislation backed by City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the use of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park would end by June 2028.

After a federal agent shot an immigrant in New York City, inciting protests, some of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s allies questioned his attitude toward the president and his own Police Department.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani invited the president to his official residence in Manhattan, where the two spoke about policing, immigration and affordable housing.

The former mayor and the sitting mayor shared a few words at the anniversary ceremony on Friday.

In recent weeks, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has visited firehouses around New York City as part of an effort to direct the public’s attention toward the victims, and away from himself.

The mayor said in recent interviews that it was important to acknowledge the city’s role in slavery but that he could not commit to payouts before his racial equity commission completes its report.

Anthony E. Shorris, a former deputy mayor and a partner at McKinsey, and Lina Khan, the former chair of the Federal Trade Commission, will lead the city’s Economic Development Corporation.
